Students Lead Women’s Month Celebration at Al-Mustafa University

Al-Mustafa University – South Africa Campus hosted a special Women’s Month Celebration, organised and led by the university’s students. The programme provided a platform for students and academics to reflect on the role, dignity, resilience, and social contributions of women from Islamic, African, and contemporary perspectives.
The programme opened with a recitation of the Holy Qur’an, followed by poetry recitations and presentations delivered by students. A key theme of the student contributions was “The Status and Role of Women in Islam,” highlighting the dignity granted to women in Islamic teachings and their important role in family, education, community development, and wider society.
A special academic presentation was delivered by Ms Nangoma, a graduate of the University of Johannesburg, who presented a comparative perspective on Palestinian women’s resistance and the historical struggle of South African women. Her presentation explored how women in both contexts have demonstrated resilience, courage, and social responsibility in defending their communities, preserving collective identity, and contributing to national dignity and social advancement.
The discussion highlighted the experiences of Palestinian and South African women as examples of how women can play an influential role in times of social and political challenge, not only through direct resistance but also through education, family leadership, community mobilisation, preservation of identity, and the strengthening of social solidarity.
One of the distinctive features of the programme was that it was planned and conducted by the students themselves, providing them with an opportunity to develop their academic, cultural, organisational, and public-speaking skills while engaging with an important social issue.
The Women’s Month Celebration reflected Al-Mustafa University’s commitment to creating student-led academic and cultural platforms that encourage dialogue between Islamic values, African experiences, and contemporary social realities.
